Nutrition Labels Getting Makeover

Okay, I admit: I’m cynical when it comes to trusting what’s in my food. For this reason, I spend much of my time reading the food labels, while grocery shopping. Even though I buy the same items week after week, I still check the labels to make sure the ingredients haven’t changed.

The current food label is a little difficult to understand. It’s hard to tell how much sugar, sodium, and fat are in a single serving. Not to mention the number of calories. If you’re not careful, you could end up consuming more calories than needed.

Well, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is lending a helping hand to consumers, by changing the overall design of the nutrition labels, which will help consumers to make better food choices. The new labels are supposed to be easier to read, and help to demystify what is in packaged foods. Calories and serving size will be more prominent on the new label; an important step to addressing the nation’s obesity epidemic.
